Charleston-North, South Carolina -- 3640 Dorchester Rd

The second Charleston area Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex, the North or Airport location, opened in the spring of 1977. While it wore the Motor Lodge moniker, it was a modern high rise complex more like the highway-type lodging facilities that came to dominate Interstate interchanges of the mid to late 1990s. Perhaps its forward design helped to explain its longevity as a Howard Johnson, for by May of 2006 it was still listed on hojo.com.

Bob Venditti wrote that Charleston-North was a "surprisingly nice high-rise Motor Lodge (unfortunately) in a neighborhood that is not well-kept." He noted that his "6th floor room was clean and attractive and well-kept." Furthermore "the room wing hallways were well-maintained while keeping a nice retro feel," and "Everything worked well and the staff was friendly."
