Florence,
South Carolina --
2001 W Lucas St (U.S. 52 @ I-95) |
|
Opened
in the fall of 1969, the Florence complex was immediately along
Interstate 95 affording it maximum throught-the-windshield visibility.
It was set up in the classic Motor Lodge and Restaurant style --
featuring an A-frame Gate Lodge and "T" style Restaurant. |

Florence
lost its status as a HoJo's Motor Lodge in 1994 and was
quickly converted into a Shoney's
Inn.
Note the arrow
in the photo to the left--it points to the original Howard
Johnson's sign supports. |

Its
well designed and appealing guest buildings retained their good
looks and did not suffer stuccoification or slider eradication
while the location wore the Shoney's name plate.
However
the A-frame Gate Lodge was demolished and a new lobby was built
in its place (the new mansard lobby was likely built after the
property was converted). |

The
Shoney's
Inn chain, founded in 1976, had fallen upon hard times
by the 2000s, and by 2006 nearly all had been converted into
other brands or closed. Florence became a Guesthouse
Inn by Phil's March '03 visit.
Note
the continued use of the circa 1985 sign frame. The Restaurant
was where the Bojangles
was located. |
