Rock Hill, South Carolina -- 2625 Cherry Rd (U.S. 21 @ I-77)

Situated south of the North Carolina line, and not too far from Charlotte, the Rock Hill Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex opened in 1974. A large Motor Lodge built in the mansard style, it featured 135 guest rooms.

After its Restaurant was converted into a Denny's, the complex suffered a layer of stucco and a new facade for the lobby & Restaurant. However even with the new front, parts of the original, but no longer Orange Mansard remained visible. The Motor Lodge had remained a well maintained Howard Johnson until almost the end of the 20th century.

Abruptly converted into Choice Hotel's Quality Inn brand in 1999, the property recycled both the smaller circa 1985 HJ roadsign (at right) and the larger circa 1970s Interstate sign.

Note that the Quality logo has changed since Phil's 2002 photos.

Those gas prices at the Racetrac in the background look pretty good today!
