The
sprawling 105 unit Spartanburg Motor Lodge and Restaurant opened
in 1959 to rave reviews. An excellent example of the Howard Johnson
Company's efforts to produce standardized lodging facilities, the
property remained viable until Interstate 85 was realigned, and
even then remained open for a number of years as the unbranded Spartanburg
Motor Lodge.
Having
lost the Howard Johnson's brand in 1987, the Spartanburg complex
remained remarkably intact as recently as 2003. Although well preserved,
it had been abandoned, roped off, and several "no trespassing"
signs had been set up to scare off would be HoJo-oligists by 2002.
Perhaps it yet survives -- in some shape or form, but it has more
than likely been demolished and erased from the roadscape... |
