The Red Roof Brand is now almost as meaningless as the Howard Johnson name. Like the HJ moniker owned by Cendant, Red Roof is owned by another franchise mill called Accor. The French entity, Accor, owns about nine brand names, with the most familiar to Americans being Motel 6 and Red Roof Inn. I say the brands are almost meaningless because when one motel property is able to convert to another by slapping up a new sign, patrons lose the ability to differentiate one brand from another. Moreover the result is that each property becomes unique, and cannot accurately predict to the patron what another will be like!
