Fredericksburg, Virginia -- 5327 Jefferson Davis Hwy

Convenient "to many historic shrines and Civil War Battlefields" Fredericksburg opened in the Summer of 1966 with 133 guest rooms in its four floors. Advertised as being midway between Richmond and Washington, the Motor Lodge featured extra-large rooms as well as a gift shop.

The Restaurant at the Fredericksburg complex had been a Howard Johnson Corporate location, and was the first in Virginia to have been converted to Marriott's Big Boy brand after HoJo's was dissolved in 1985-86. Made over into a Denny's during the 1990s it became largely unrecognizable as having been a Howard Johnson Restaurant.

Above and Below: Note the change in the "Denny's" letters above the entrance between visits to the site.

"Our efficient and courteous staff offer the best of service fro groups from 10 to 175 persons. Our meeting rooms are engineered to provide comfort in heating and cooling as well as lighting and sound."

Above: Classic view of the Restaurant's overflow dining area--in many Restaurants it was called "The Lamplighter Room."

Below: Unfortunately the interior walkway between the Lodge and Restaurant was locked. The area behind the vintage stone facade held meeting rooms.
