Little changed from the 1970s, Harrisonburg's Gate Lodge was undergoing remodeling during the summer of 1998 which served to render its appearance less than appealing. The interior was a time capsule! Brochures from long closed or converted HoJo's still held their spots in racks touting the past prominence of the Orange Roofed chain.

Of the Tuckers, Tommy lived on to see the breakup of Howard Johnson's and then the devastating 1996 edict that forced him to remove the Orange Roof from his Gate Lodge.

Below: Tommy Tucker (wearing the coat and tie) walks out of the Gate Lodge to see why I am taking pictures.

An incredible sight, the Harrisonburg Restaurant seemed to carry on as if there were still a thousand in the chain. It was really amazing to behold with its near perfect form and gleaming Orange Roof nearly forty years after it had been built.

Below: Note that the Restaurant had used a circa 1990 FAI type street sign seen in Dan's photo in the left background--it had been removed by 1998.
