Richmond-North,
Virginia
-- 801 Parham Rd. |
|
Located
at the northern approach to the Richmond area, the North complex
was opened in 1966. It featured a classic Motor Lodge and Restaurant
layout with 82 rooms in its two, two-story guest buildings. |

A
moderately large site just on the west side of I-95, Richmond-North
was designed with room to expand. Forward-looking developers even
paved additional parking for expansion which never occurred. |

Lasting
until about 1999, the long lived Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge
became a well-appointed Holiday
Inn. Based on advertising photographs, the Holiday Inn's proprietors
considerably updated but maintained the hard to improve upon original
guest room layout. Note that even the privacy screens were retained! |

Unused
for an extended period of time, the Restaurant was derelict and
had had "no trespassing" signs posted around its periphery.
Apparently the unit was remodeled during the middle to late 1970s
when the bay window was added at a time when the Howard Johnson
Company had embarked on a plan to increase average check totals
by enlarging sit-down dining space. Interestingly the building
appeared to have retained its Dairy Bar through that period while
most lost theirs. |

Several
original HoJo's cues remained at the site as recently as the early
2000's--like the original "Arizona Cactus Stone" decorative
wing wall. |

By
the middle 2000s, the Restaurant apparently came to bear little
resemblance to what it had been built to be, and had been made
over in a diner-esque design. |
