Anaheim's original plans called for a "drive-under" A-frame Canopy Gate Lodge situated with the Nims-type restaurant facing Harbor Boulevard, but as construction commenced the Gate Lodge was dropped from the plans. When the Motor Lodge opened, its guest buildings were all two-story with the high-rise section being added about a year into the facility's operation.

"Designed by architect William L. Pereira creator of the Los Angeles International Airport and the new Los Angeles Art Museum, the new Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge at Disneyland sets a new standard for the Hosts of the Highway".
