Built in perhaps what might be described as "California-style," the San Jose Restaurant was one of not many with its particular design. Derived from the "Concept '65" prototype, units in the California-style featured an A-frame like their cousins in other parts of the North America (AKA "T-style"), but were different in layout and fetured a "center" mounted cupola. Examples of the California-style building could be found mostly in the West, but one is known in Michigan and a Nims was remodeled in New Jersey to resemble the western look.

A Company owned Restaurant, San Jose was transferred to Marriott in 1986. Initially Marriott planed to covert its aquired units into Big Boys, but gave away the brand. Subsequently it created the Allie's brand with the intent of using it for its Howard Johnson's locations. However a fundamental shift in business plans resulted in Marriott abandoning its restaurant buiness entirely.

Units in California were sold to a management group of former Howard Johnson's and Marriott employees who create the Coco's and Carrow's brands. The unit at San Jose became a Coco's and remained in its largely unaltered building until it was closed on April 25, 2005. Sadly the beautifully well-preserved and intact building was demolished not long after Phil's 2005 visit.
