Phil got to Denver too
late to see the historic Motor Lodge/Restaurant complex, for
it was demolished not long before he arrived on the scene. At
least he discovered part of an original HJ highway-sign and one
parking lot light standard that remained.
Walter Hackney, a Denver
area lodging and neon historian, wrote me that the site will
be used for a condominium complex which will be adjacent to a
new light rail line. He added that "the old building may
have gotten the last laugh though; rumor has it that the contractor
doing the demolition severely underestimated the costs
of asbestos removal." Walt reminisced that he had often
eaten in the Restaurant when it was Skillets, and that it had
retained the feel of a Howard Johnson's. He sadly noted that
it had been a favorite meeting place for his old work network,
and it is missed...
