New London, Connecticut
-- 929 Bank Street

New London was a "Hillside-type" pre-War location opened in about 1940. During the late 1940s it was franchised to John S. Saxton who also held an interest in the Branford Heights Restaurant. Incredibly New London was an Orange Roofed Howard Johnson's for nearly 45 years.

By the latter 2010s, the former HoJo's was operating as Paesano's on Bank, an Italian themed eatery.

Left: Remodeled in the 1960s, New London was transformed into modernity. It relinquished its Cape Cod image for the space age!!

Below: In the 1950s New London featured the Winthrop Room as meeting space for up to 90 patrons.

Above, Below, and Lower: Terrific photographs by John Margolies from 1978 documenting the New London, Connecticut Howard Johnson's Restaurant still sporting its 1960s make-over well into the latter 1970s. Unfortunately the Library of Congress incorrectly identifies the photographs as the "Niantic," Connecticut Howard Johnson's Restaurant. Obviously it is New London.

Above, Below, and Lower: Above in John Margolies 1978 photo, note the "pagoda-style" Kentucky Fried Chicken reflected in the HoJo's entry doors! Although the pagoda-style building was demolished, a KFC outlet continued to occupy its site well into the 2000s!
