Newark,
Delaware --1119
S College Avenue |
|
Opened
in may of 1964, the Newark complex featured traditional Howard Johnson's
amenities and was the last original Motor Lodge operating in Delaware.
At
the end of the 1990s it was one of the last best preserved examples
of what the chain had been. However it's owners wasted who knows
how much money "remodeling" it in the early 2000s.

Introduced
in the late 1960s, Howard Johnson's offered all you can
eat specials "coast-to-coast."
Every Monday was Chicken Fry and Wednesday was Fish Fry.
Both meals included french fries and cole slaw. The tent
cards seen on the tables in the post card featured a whimsical
likeness of a chicken and fish advertising the all you can
eat meals.
Especially
note the detail at left and in the lower Photograph (and
detail). The Yellow Roof of the Newark
Horne's Motor Lodge is clearly evident through
the Lamplighter room's front window and in the pool shots
from one of Dan Donahue's HoJo's adventures! |

The
Restaurant remained a Howard Johnson's until the middle 1990s,
and then was likely converted into a Bob's Big Boy before ending
up as a Friendly's. |

Back
in 2006, Bob Venditti discovered that Newark's interior
was thankfully virtually untouched! He said that the "rooms
and hallways (were) in good shape," and added that
"the split-level nature of the interior corridors
can be confusing, depending on which door you enter from."
He
noted also that "the heavy-handed exterior remod
was causing damage to the room's balcony roof, as it was
noticeably blocking rain drainage, with ceiling rot as
a result."

The
Motor Lodge was converted into a Red Roof Inn probably during
the 2010s. Google views from the start of the 2020s do not bode
well for the site's continued existence. The views seem to show
that the swimming pool was filled in and that the site was possibly
no longer open. |
