When Arnold Isken opened
his Howard Johnson's in 1955-56 it was the start of a local mini-hospitality
empire which grew to also include a Holiday Inn franchise among
other businesses. Later his son, Paul Isken, would join him in
running his local roadside establishments. At the heart of Isken's
prosperity was the HoJo's--the profits from it propelled the
family fortunes well into the 1990s. When interviewed by the
Washington Post in 2000, Mr. Isken stated that he had
no intention of giving up his Howard Johnson's, but in 2002 he
sold out. Perhaps he became ill and his son was no longer interested?
New owners will soon
have remodeled the restaurant. It is hoped that they will maintain
at least a small part of what was once
"The Flavor of America."
