If tourists tired of the many nearby attractions, the Lake Wales Howard Johnson's was an attraction of its own! In addition to its comfortable and modern guest rooms, the property was laden with amenities. Since the complex was all ground level, it was spread out in a park-like setting complete with a large central courtyard. For guests, the highlight was the large and inviting heated swimming pool which included views of the site's fresh water lake. Moreover the lake itself afforded visitors the choice of fishing or lounging at its beach. But the outdoor amenities didn't stop there, for there was also a shuffleboard court, a small putting green, and the option of ping-pong. Later a meeting room, tennis courts, and an exercise facility were added as the property evolved.

Above: While the buildings had been slathered with stucco, the end of one guest building was overlooked and retained its pleasantly attractive natural brick.

Above: The small practice putting green remained at the site until the middle 2000s, but by 2007 it became a basketball court

Below: Still in reasonable condition, the shuffleboard court looked to have been little used since at least the beginning of the current millennium.

Lower: Featuring two tennis courts, they remained serviceable. However maintenance was obviously lacking, and it appeared in 2007 that few guests were utilizing them.

Above: Not likely used for swimming or sunbathing, the lake at Lake Wales had lost all but a tiny patch of sandy beach by 2007. The small pier likely added during the 1990s was becoming weatherworn, but still usable. Just after sunrise it was a refreshing and serene setting!
