Likely opened in late
1972 or early 1973, this Motor Lodge's Restaurant has been reborn
(sort of) as a Howard Johnson's.
This once busy Restaurant
was one that remained branded a HJ while it was owned by Marriott.
When Marriott decided to exit the family restaurant segment,
FAI acquired both Key Largo and Islamorada in a deal that included
fifteen other locations in July of 1991. By the early 2000s,
FAI itself decided to cease most of its operations and closed
all but one of its Restaurants including Key Largo. In the meantime,
a local entrepreneur was able to reopen this HoJo's offering
limited service and a non-standard breakfast only menu. The operators
are able to use the Howard Johnson's name by agreement with FAI.
