Above: Just 6 at the time, Steven LJ Russo posed with his uncle for a quick photograph in front of their rooms--219 and 220!

Mr. Russo recalled when he was a child that his immediate family often took joint vacations with his aunt, uncle and cousins. On one of their family adventures they had the good fortune to have been guests at the then nearly brand new St. Augustine-East Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge.

Well suited to attract the throngs of tourists visiting "America's Oldest City," the former Howard Johnson's boasted:

A delightful fresh water pool neath the palms ... Room service ... 24-hour switchboard service and a direct dialing telephone reservation network to all HJ Lodges ... Swings for active tots ... Badminton, shuffleboard, and horseshoes too ... Pick and purchase sundry counter ...

By the 2000s its original pool had been filled in and a new one installed.
