GROUNDBREAKINGS
ATHENS GA. --There's a big new 60-unit motor lodge and
restaurant going up here... Regional Director Walter Waldron
(center) stands by at the Nov. 18 groundbreaking ceremonies
with HJ's Licensee Operators Al Hurvitz, Bob Blumberg and
Fred and Harry Loef. |
|
|
Construction
of the complex began in late 1964 with its Restaurant open for business
by the summer of 1965. Of the 26 Motor Lodges operating in the Peach
State, and in that state where the very first Howard Johnson's Motor
Lodge was opened, Athens is the last still wearing its Orange Roof
as a Howard Johnson's.
