By 2002 Phil discovered
that nothing was left save the 1980s HJ sign which now advertises
the Salvation Army. Mr. Edwards must have missed the destruction
by not too many weeks when he took the above shot.
The image below shows
just how high the road level has been increased, and finally
at bottom Phil notes, "the Gate Lodge was where the Salvation
Army pseudo-church is now."

Having recently driven through
the area I can attest to the fact that it was an awesome location
to catch the passing motorist's eye--today it's hard to miss
the Salvation Army temple as the Interstate makes a slight bend
forcing the building to momentarily fill the driver's frame of
reference. The site would have allowed just enough decision time
to make a quick exit for an enjoyable meal or a restful night
of slumber... |
