Somewhat protected from the elements and trespassers, the Motor Lodge had been boarded up, but by a couple of years later the boards had been removed and the property was prepped for demolition.

Above: Largely stripped of its furnishings, Scott found several reminders of the Motor Lodge's past like the 1980s era Landmark Supply Company guest room chair behind a broken slider.

Below: A design element found at most Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges built prior to 1970 were the furturistic open stairways -- what I like to call "Brady Bunch Stairs." Topeka's were still in place sans railings in the guest buildings.
