Photographs 2004: Courtesy of Scott Sargent

Incredibly, remnants of room interiors could still be found when Scott Sargent paid Topeka his final visit.

Above: Note the continuous counter, 1980s era grass cloth and acrylic lights

Right: Another group of rooms still had paneling and original 1963 "tear drop" lights as well as padded head board units.

Guest bathrooms had remained largely original, but had been gutted by 2004.

Below: Note the trash can with the black liner that a housekeeper had made ready for the next guest -- a guest that would never arrive.

These photos show a padded headboard unit that Mr. Sargent acquired earlier at a sale after part of the Motor Lodge had been renovated. More like a piece of furniture, the cleverly designed units offered storage in a compartment behind the padded headboards and featured an elaborate Pamper Panel. Note that the Pamper Panel controlled a number of electrical device including the "valence' which was the room's window or slider curtain!
