Although Howard Johnson's advertising usually promoted family patronage (see left), one postcard of the East location (above) depicts a series of some groovin swingers at poolside and in the Rum Keg!

While its advertising emphasized the Motor Lodge's outdoor recreational amenities, many of the postcard views allowed potential patrons to see that the Lodge was conveniently located along I-10.

By the end of the 20th century, much of Orleans Parish had begun to exhibit the symptoms of a place in decline. A change in demographics brought about by a series of events led to the loss of many businesses and affluent citizens, and the eastern section of New Orleans was especially affected. As the tax base shrunk, infrastructure deteriorated, and criminal activity increased resulting in declining investment rates by the business sector. Thus the New Orleans-East HoJo's lost its way and crumbled in plain view of motorists travelling on Interstate 10.
