By the early 1980s, Motor
Lodges were no longer required to have an adjacent Restaurant,
and by the mid 1980s Amherst's Restaurant was demolished. Additionally
the Gate Lodge was razed, and the space once occupied by both
the Restaurant and Gate Lodge became a new three story guest
building.
In 2004 Amherst was the
LAST original Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge in Massachusetts
to bear the once famous name (Fenway was still a Howard Johnson in 2004,
but it was not constructed as a Howard Johnson's and lacks the
features that made HoJo's what it once was).
