From Landmark Dec. 1963 vol. 2 no. 8

 Postcard circa late 1960s

 Detroit-Downtown, Michigan
1020 Washington Blvd

Detroit-Downtown was not constructed in the traditional HJ Motor Lodge layout. According to directories it became a Howard Johnson's in 1966 and remained listed until the early 1980s.

In the postcard view above I have circled where the Restaurant's entrance was. The shot below was taken from a similar angle as the postcard, and if you look closely the Restaurant's HJ stone facing was still evident after the hotel was converted. Moreover, aside from the name change little else was modified after the location lost its once famous name. From the brochure, the rooms remained the same--complete with drops and padded headboards, and the Trolley Tavern continued to utilize HoJo's chairs.

Cactus Bob's detective work uncovered that after the Mariner, the Former HoJo's became the Ambassador Best Western, and was most recently a Holiday Inn Express.
