Lasting nearly a quarter of a century, the classically designed St Paul Motor Lodge was a Howard Johnson's until 1989.

Above: Situated to accommodate the 3M training center adjacent to it, the St. Paul Motor Lodge was physically connected to the center so that 3M employees could patronize the Howard Johnson's without ever going outside!

Right: The property having been subjected to unsightly and ill-conceived remodelings at least retained its original ca. 1965 Trapezoid highway sign--albeit recycled by the Country Inn.

Virtually unrecognizable, the once spectacular HoJo's lost its signature A-frame Gate Lodge and its Restaurant was all but completely concealed. The classic site which had been the very model of modern hospitality, has been rendered a disgrace to its past--a hodgepodge of poorly planned and thoughlessly executed remodelings.

Sadly the only things still worth seeing at St. Paul were its recycled signs.

Above: Once advertising the site with an "orange roof" logo, the circa 1970s street sign was in front of the former Restaurant.
