Complete with its
all-weather enclosed heated swimming pool and recreation area,
the St. Paul Howard Johnson's was well ahead of its time. |

Note
the "patio" chairs being used in the meeting room.
Although anything is possible it is unlikely that they were
actually used for meetings. A brochure for the Cheverly, MD
location also indicated that the patio chairs were used in meeting
rooms. |

Rooms
at St. Paul featured elaborate Pamper Panels which included
controls to view the swimming pool. Note that guests at the
Washington, D. C. Motor Lodge were also afforded remote viewing
of its roof top pool. |

Only
modestly upgraded with new linens, light fixtures, television,
and curtains, St. Paul's rooms were still modern and comfortable
ten years after they were built. |

If
you compare this photograph with the older one from
1965, you will notice that the Lamplighter Room had ceased
to be by 1975. |

By
2005 the once ultra-modern St. Paul Howard Johnson's had been
converted into a Country Inn and Suites.
