Photos November 2005: Phil Edwards

Most of the damage done to Independence occurred during the 1990s while the Motor Lodge was still operated as a Howard Johnson. Sadly its signature A-frame Gate Lodge was demolished and a stucco embellished facade was tacked on to the new lobby and faces of the guest buildings.

Lower: An adjacent Phillips 66 station's original highway sign was located at the end of one of the HoJo's parking lots. Although it was not integrated with the HJ complex as was sometimes the case, the station nonetheless played an important role in rounding out services available to the Motor Lodge's guests.

Left & Below: An unsightly false ceiling of tiles was dropped lower than the beams concealing them. At least the rooms had retained their sliders!

Lower Right: The Pamper Panel was replaced with a plain plate which was papered over.

Below: Phil's 2nd floor single room was likely once configured with a second vanity and privacy screen.
