Middletown, NY
 --551 Rt 211 East

Awkwardly arranged on its hillside site, Middletown's Mansards were not clearly visible to motorists. The large complex opened in 1974 and by the middle 2000s its Motor Lodge became one of the last original Howard Johnson's in all of The Empire State.

The Restaurant thrived as a HoJo's until the end of the Company's existence in the middle 1980s. Subsequently its building housed a succession of eateries. In May of 2002 it was intact but closed, for a long dispute about liquor sales with the Motor Lodge's owner had stymied its success. All of the restaurant's remaining Howard Johnson's contents were auctioned off and I was fortunate to have been able to purchase a small Landmark Supply table and two of the later-style cane back chairs.

Right: Complete with its Dairy Bar and cantilevered stools, the former Howard Johnson's had maintained its integrity for nearly 20 years after it had lost its once famous name!
