After its 2002 auction, the Middletown Restaurant remained vacant for about three years and then was considerably altered and reopened as a Perkins. The conversion process eliminated the site's long-lived integrity. Note that the restaurant's entrance was moved so that it faced the highway and a Perkins-esque facade was added to the building's new front (not pictured). Moreover the passageway linking the restaurant to the Motor Lodge was unfortunately sealed shut.

Remarkably, Middletown's Motor Lodge Mansard became one of the last to sport its original gleaming Orange Roof (if only it hadn't lost its Beacon!). The Mansard, of course, marked the Motor Lodge's lobby. Utilizing the Mansard-style as opposed to the traditional detached Gate Lodge allowed for integrated and large public areas which were touted as amenities to attract greater numbers of guests.

Above: The Mansard lobbies provided more space for guests to mingle and facilitated more efficient work areas for employees than did the Gate Lodges of yonder years.
