Squaring
off the iconic Gate Lodge was not enough--instead it had to
transformed into a hideous stucco covered monstrosity along
with the rest of the not long ago nearly pristine Motor Lodge.

Nothing
can forgive Newburgh's owners for having created the unsightly
mess that the place became. At least the Gate Lodge's interior
retained some interesting features like the one time drop frame
and a triangle of exposed wood. Note the 75th anniversary poster
and the wall rack of Howard Johnson advertising cards.
Covered
over with coat upon coat of stucco, not even the expensive new
landscaping can redeem the property's curb appeal. At least the
general shape of the guest buildings remained along with the patios
and balconies.
