Gold Rock, North Carolina -- 7568 NC Highway 48

Also known as Rocky Mount or Battleboro, Gold Rock was the last authentic Howard Johnson's Motor Lodge complex built and opened in the Tar Heel State. It began serving Hungry and Sleepy Americans near the end of HoJo's reign of roadside hospitality greatness--in December of 1979. The 87 room property featured a connected Mansard Lobby and Restaurant.

Remarkably the property retained its Orange Mansard and Howard Johnson brand into the late 2000s.

Above & Below: Passing through on I-95 back in the early 1980s, Bob found Gold Rock to be doing a good business and displayed a towering "roof logo" highway sign!

Above & Below: With only moderate alterations by the latter 2000s, Gold Rock even without its beacons maintained a large degree of its original curb appeal. Note the recycled ca. 1985-1996 "rounded edge" Howard Johnson highway and street signs.
