The High Point Howard Johnson's complex opened in 1974 with 104 guest rooms along a now largely bypassed stretch of old I-85. Additionally the site is convenient to North Carolina's nearby furniture outlet district.

Although it was built along the lines of a traditional highway Motor Lodge, it featured a connected Mansard style Restaurant and Lobby. The design was the last to use an expanse of Howard Johnson's trademark Orange porcelain enamel roof tiles. During the Lodge's heyday, both the Restaurant and Lobby were crowned with Beacon style cupolas.
