Lasting
until 1981 as a Howard Johnson's, the site was eventually integrated
into the Gateway
Travel Plaza complex. The Restaurant became Fat
Jimmy's Outfitters, while the Motor Lodge operated for a time
as an Econo Lodge. By the middle 2000s, the Motor Lodge was renamed
the Gateway Travel Lodge, and a portion of it was razed to make
way for a Holiday Inn Express.
Remarkably the Breezewood Restaurant survived as a stand alone
unit after the Motor Lodge lost its name! A high volume site,
the Restaurant had been a HJ Corporate location in 1985 when the
company was dissolved and its assets acquired by Marriott. In
turn, Marriott recognized the unit's high brand recognition by
locals and travelers as a HoJo's and did not convert it into one
of its own brands. Upon Marriott's exit of the family restaurant
business, it transferred Breezewood in 1991 to Franchise Associates
Incorporated (FAI). Unfortunately FAI lacked capital for even
the short term and "cashed in" on Breezewood shortly
after acquiring it. |
