Opened in the spring of 1957, the Gettysburg Restaurant began with usual Howard Johnson's fanfare. Upon its opening, one hundred local residents were invited to inspect the new facility and were treated to a free steak dinner. Moreover a host of dignitaries from the Howard Johnson Company were on hand to welcome the new eatery.

Like many Howard Johnson's, Gettysburg's Restaurant pre-dated its adjacent Motor Lodge by a couple of years. A busy location, the Restaurant featured a sizable gift shop in addition to its dining and snack facilities which seated 143 happy patrons.

Upon the sale of the Howard Johnson's Company to Marriott and Prime Motor Inns, the local newspaper interviewed Gettysburg's manager, Pib Difebo, about the Restaurant's future. He had no information other than to say that its lease expired in 1987. Thus it is likely the site's Restaurant remained a HoJo's through the term of its lease. Probably demolished in the 1990s, a Friendly's came to occupy the former Howard Johnson's Restaurant site.

During the late 1980s or early '90s, the Gate Lodge was squared off and shorn of its spire cupola and signature Lamplighter weather vane in order to comply with the brand's then owner. Note that Mr. Witt went to some effort in order to maintain the Motor Lodge's HJ identity by having an orange colored metal roof installed where the orange porcelain enamel roof tiles had been!
