Somehow the Motor Lodge's name banner remained in place more than forty years (the lamplighter figural was long gone though)!

Introduced in about 1960, for several years both the Restaurants and Motor Lodges featured the plaques as badges of pride, and helped to create a sense of place and unique identity for each Howard Johnson's.
