Sioux Falls, South Dakota -- 3300 West Russell

Featuring an unusual Mansard design, the large Sioux Falls complex opened in 1971 along with its sister Howard Johnson's in Rapid City. With its towering 80 foot tall highway sign, weary motorists did not miss the HoJo's!

The Motor Lodge touted its convention facilities, and offered ten banquet or meeting rooms with a total of 32,000 square feet of space. By the time of the aerial shot below, a lounge had been added to the facility on the left side of the Restaurant.

Although never a Howard Johnson's, the Bismark Inn was at one time a Best Western. It was immediately adjacent to the Sioux Falls complex and was owned by the same group that held both the Rapid City and Sioux Falls HoJo's.

Often used to demonstrate a motel's modernity in the 1980s, satellite receivers were photographed showing the Orange Roof and Howard Johnson's sign.

The image above shows the Restaurant shortly after it was converted into the Oaks Restaurant -- its Orange Roof was painted dark brown or black in the process.

A key guest amenity was the indoor-outdoor recreation area and heated swimming pool. Furthermore, guests were offered and enclosed playground as well as a game room.
