Photographs 2004: Courtesy of Phil Edwards

Its grounds and structures still reasonably well-maintained, the former Motor Lodge turned Travelodge retained much of its Howard Johnson's character as recently as July of 2005. Its sister location, Amarillo-West, was not so lucky, for it was demolished by the early 2000s.

Unfortunately time may have run out for Amarillo-East too, for as of April 2006 it was no longer counted among Travelodges on Cendant's website.

Amarillo by Morning...
Amazingly, Phil Edwards discovered that the rooms at Amarillo-East were little changed from their last days under the Orange Roof. His room was still decorated with fixtures and furnishings that had been purchased from the Landmark Supply Company -- even the circa 1980s grass cloth or HJ vinyl wall covering was intact!

His room even still had the metal "conserve energy" sign with its Howard Johnson's Roof Logo.

Save for the new toilet, the rest of Phil's guest bathroom was intact from its HoJo's days.
