Cleverly
sited along Interstate 10 where it intersected a section of U.S.
90, the Beaumont complex was opened in the summer of 1970. It exemplified
the classic design of that period, and boasted an a-framed T-style
Restaurant and a-frame Gate Lodge along with standardized two-story
guest buildings and a swimming pool. The Motor Lodge remained a
Howard Johnson's until about 1990. |

Back
when Phil Edwards visited the site, he discovered that the Gate
Lodge's interior was still pleasantly open on the inside offering
observers a full view of the remarkable framing and timber used
to create the classic structure. |

Its
exterior in good condition, the former Motor Lodge turned Travelodge
managed to retain much of its curb appeal--if only it still had
its Orange! |
