Advertising suppliment circa 1965: Design Ideas '65, Koppers

Dallas-Market Center -- 3111 Stemmons Freeway (I-45)

Opened in the spring of 1964, the Dallas-Market Center facility marked a milestone in Howard Johnson's history, for it was the the 200th Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex to have been opened! The images seen here, from Koppers, were touting Howard Johnson's use of their specially treated wood called Wolmanized lumber. The treated wood was supposed to provide "permanent protection against rot and termite damage." Another significant benefit was that the natural-finish wood would never have to be painted.

The entire complex consisted of five buildings--a 156 seat restaurant, a Gate Lodge, and three 40 unit two-story guest buildings.

Architectural work for the Motor Lodge was conducted by Starns & Rentscher of Miami, Florida and Woodward Cape & Associates of Dallas, Texas.
