How Bad Could it Be?
That's what I though as I excitedly pulled up to the freshly Orange painted Gate Lodge.

At the desk, the clerk informed me that he only had a double room available and that I could take a look. Well, look I did! My photographs make the place look at least ten times better than it actually was. The room was the worst motel room that I had ever seen. Graffiti covered some of the room's furniture, and the rest had obviously been stored outside in the rain as most of the particle board had become swollen from moisture. One light bulb shown in the second vanity area as well as the bathroom making it difficult for photography.

The many original innovative Howard Johnson's features that remained could not make up for how far the once grand place had fallen--very sad. I would never have a chance to test the double shower heads!

Lingering only long enough to take these quick photos, I made a hasty retreat nearly running over two apparent prostitutes in the corridor.

What a disappointment and terrible waste...

Battered and abused, time has run out for this one-time Orange Gem of roadside hospitality.
