Postcard circa 1950s

The Robert E. Lee Motel was never a Howard Johnson's, but was older and exemplified motels available to travelers prior to the advent of HoJo's and Holiday Inn. Located just to the south of the Bristol HJ Motor Lodge and Restaurant complex it was described as a AAA rated motel and restaurant that offered 21 air-conditioned units all with tiled baths, telephones, and free televisions. Several circa 1950s motels and eateries were built in the vicinity taking advantage of lax codes and the excellent location north of Bristol along the once heavily traveled U.S. 11.
