The Restaurant remained a HoJo's until about 1966. A bypass route of U.S. 29 was constructed around the heart of Danville which connected to the original Greensboro Highway to the south of the Howard Johnson's, and likely contributed to the site's decline. Nonetheless, the building remained standing and in use well into the late 2000s and had remarkably retained its general recognizability. Moreover the Wayside Motor Court was still adjacent in some capacity, but not likely to be AAA rated or Duncan Hines approved anytime soon or ever again!
