Winchester, Virginia
-- In the George Washington Hotel

 140 N Cameron Street

Once a premier lodging facility and gathering place of Winchester's prominent citizens, the George Washington Hotel dated from 1924. Modern for its time, the large in-town hotel offered guests a unique Roman-bath type swimming pool and large ballroom facilities among its amenities.

The Winchester Howard Johnson's was added in the early 1950s. The Restaurant actually opened on April 20, 1951, and was owned by licensee John von Sneidern who also owned the Allentown, Pennsylvania Restaurant and was a very active member of the Howard Johnson's Agent's Council.

George Washington Hotel, Winchester, Va.
The George Washington, a thoroughly fireproof and modern hotel of 150  rooms, is operated entirely on the European plan. All bedrooms are large,  well ventilated, artistically furnished and arranged both singularly and in suites. Although, with its modern conveniences, the entire hotel maintains  its colonial design and atmosphere in its architecture and coloring.

Above and Below: Note that once the HoJo's was installed that the hotel lost a stairwell and entry from N. Cameron Street.

Said to have once been the hub of activity connected to Winchester's famed Apple Blossom Festival, the George Washington and its Howard Johnson's were enthusiastic supporters of the gala affair for many years.
