Astonishingly
not just the Howard Johnson's facade, but also the interior of
the basement level Restaurant remained little altered for FIFTY
years. Save for the Porcelain Enamel roof facade tiles having
been painted black and the brick panted white, it was intact. |

Above
and Below: Although a false wall faced with paneling
and a barrier door had been installed, a quick comparison reveals
that both shots are of the main dining room space but from different
vantage points. |

Just
on the other side of the false wall, the Dairy Bar was still in
place! It had been frozen in time and sealed off, but by the middle
2000s it would all be gone--only these couple of fleeting photos
through grimy windows provide a hint of what we almost had a chance
to explore. Note the patriotic eagle and star motif above the
back bar and also just barely visible above the interior door
that led into the hotel. The motif was found at every Howard Johnson's
built from the 1940s through the middle 1950s. |
