While
the Restaurant building remains, it came to house a variety of
businesses--from tanning/massage parlor/silk screening, to spa!
The "Arizona
Cactus Stone" niche facade would have been added during a
renovation likely in the early 1960s when Howard Johnson's spruced
up its image in a nationwide remodeling campaign. Furthermore,
the wing on the building's left side was added well after the
Restaurant was opened.
Below
and Lower: Note the extra large base for the cupola.
Later examples were much smaller, and this one served as a transitional
phase, perhaps reminding patrons of the earlier grand "neo-colonial"
buildings. When
Phil visited the site after the Motor Lodge had been razed, He
discovered that the Restaurant's roof tiles had been repainted
and most amazingly the cupola's clock had been freed from its
plywood shell!
