            The
Melbourne complex began as a stand alone Restaurant which opened
circa 1958. According to a Howard Johnson's location directroy,
its small nearby Motor Lodge was scheduled to open in January
                of 1965.

          Separated
from its earlier opened Restaurant, the Motor Lodge may have originally
featured a faux Gate Lodge similar to Tallahassee-East,
              Homestead,
              Charlotte
              or even like Niagara
              Falls.
            Note
that by the latter 2010s, the Restaurant had been razed and replaced
              by a new building. |

                Florida
was an especially lucrative market for restaurants and motels
with its booming tourist industry based in large part on the
mobility of Americans provided by automobiles in the post WW
II years. Located to the north of the Howard Johnson's along
U.S. 1 was the Colonial Court. The motel remains a mystery--Why
did it have two HoJo's looking neo-colonial cupolas with actual
Howard Johnson's weather vanes? Howard D. Johnson often encouraged
motels in close proximity to his restaurants, but what was the
connection? Unfortunately the Colonial Motel had become an "extended
stay" motel, and had fallen on hard times by the time of
my visit. The clerk in the office thought I was very
confused when I attempted to have him answer my questions! He
was not even aware that perched on the very building in which
he worked was a Howard Johnson's weather vane.
                Note
that by the middle 2010s, the cupolas with their Howard Johnson's
weather vanes were removed and the site had been renamed Rider's
                  on the Storm Inn.
