Designed by architect Rufus Nims, the Motel Driftwood was opened in the early 1950s along with an adjacent Howard Johnson's Restaurant.

Many of the Driftwood's design features were later incorporated into the designs of Howard Johnson's Motor Lodges, and the Driftwood itself became a HoJo's Motor Lodge in about 1960.

Howard Johnson's In Combination With Motel

Howard Johnson's restaurants with their orange tile roofs and "Colonial" cupolas are already famous the whole length of the Atlantic coast. Such good will and known, branded quality cannot help but benefit the motel units in the restaurant's back yard. As a pleasant buffer between restaurant and motel, there is a wide landscaped strip developed as a recreation area. The attractive character of the buildings--spreading, white, low-roofed--is immediately impressed upon passing motorists by the dramatic tent-like spread of a porte-cochere marking the office. There is a wide variety of room arrangements. from single-bed room to one with double beds.
