            Daytona-South was the
fifth or sixth Motor Lodge & Restaurant complex to open in
the Sunshine State. It began serving guests in about 1958. Since
it was one of the earlier Motor Lodges, it was also a Superior
Motel. Superior was a referral chain, and Howard Johnson's hoped
that being a member would help boost its patronage levels. |

            Quickly outgrowing its
original "53 Completely Carpeted, Centrally Air-Conditioned
and Heated Rooms all with TV and Phones," by the beginning
of the 1960s a two-story wing was constructed that brought the
total guest rooms to 85. You might notice that the first postcard
on this page shows another building was offset behind the complex--it
            was apparently never built. |
