The Lake Placid Howard
Johnson's Restaurant opened on May 17, 1956 with only 96 seats
and room for 12 at the counter. Ron
Butler was the Restaurant's assistant manager when it opened,
but by 1958 he owned the thriving HoJo's. |

Based on architect Rufus
Nims' 1948 Florida prototype, Lake Placid was built in the
most classic of modern HoJo's styles. Added onto in 1963 and
1966, the location maintained its traditional Howard Johnson's
look. However modifications in 1980, 1990, and again in the early
2000s left only a hint of Orange Roof, rendering the exterior
largely unremarkable. Take away its one-of-a-kind Howard Johnson's
street sign, paint the roof and it could be any restaurant. |
