With Howard Johnson's entry into the Buckeye State in the early 1940s a commissary was opened in Cleveland to serve the quickly growing chain. However WWII put a damper on growth and the Cleveland Commissary did not expand until the middle 1950s. Its primary purpose was to be a distribution point.

Opened September of 1967, the first HoJo Junction began operation in Troy. The Company planned to spread the new concept coast-to-coast. Designed as fast food restaurants, the units were self-service and offered a limited menu. The concept did not live up to projections and only six were ever put into operation. The three locations in Ohio eventually dropped the HoJo Junction name and became simply Howard Johnson's.

Announced in Howard Johnson's 1961 Annual Report, the Company was experimenting with new restaurant designs. The experimental "compact" unit located near Bellville was said to incorporate "new techniques to render rapid, self-service to the guest with lower operating costs."

An experimental concept, the Lamplighter Grill opened in February of 1966 and was located in the ground floor of the Cleveland-Airport Motor Lodge. It was described as being halfway between a standard HoJo's and an upscale Red Coach. A new logo was devised which featured "an old-fashioned lamplighter on an old-time ladder tending gay nineties gaslights." The concept offered its own distinct menu, china, interior and employee uniforms. Serving only lunch and dinner, it was apparently a one-off for the Company.

Opened with considerable fanfare, the all-in-one multi-story Cleveland-Lakefront Motor Lodge featured a penthouse Red Coach Grill. The upscale restaurant opened in the summer of 1965 and was said to draw on the rich lore of the Great lakes and incorporated the decor and flavor of early navel history. the unit could seat 100 guests and offered room for 55 in its cocktail lounge.
